William Heinemann, 1918. First English trade edition of Arthur Rackham illustrated edition of Algernon Charles Swinburne's "The Springtide of Life: Poems of Childhood.” Overall book is in fantastic condition for this vintage. Dark olive green cloth with gilt lettering and decorations, corners mildly scuffed/dinged but otherwise cover is in very good condition. Profusely illustrated with eight full page color plates with tissue guards plus black and white pen and ink drawings by the legendary Arthur Rackham throughout. Rackham gives us a set of gentle images that blend very nicely with the poems of early childhood and little children. He had a special affinity for delicate settings and youthful joys that comes across quite effectively in this book Front endpage shows aging, wear and rippling, mild rippling about 1 inch wide near spine on first few pages but no stains, aging on rear endpage. A classic illustrated by one of the all time legendary illustrators, rare. Great addition to any collection or as a spectacular gift. 133 pages.
