Vol. 1 No. 1 includes a "classical dictionary of the vulgar tongue", beautiful prints of ribald playing cards depicting imagined scenes from Renaissance Florence, and an absolutely gorgeous "verite" photographic essay by Garry Winogrand called "Love in the Subway". Many, many other delights in the following issues. No. 3 some waviness to pages and minimal damp staining of ink, features prints of the last studio portraits of a very sad-looking Marilyn Monroe, taken by Bert Stern 6 weeks before her death. Essential for any collector of Monroe memorabilia. No. 4 includes a letter from Allen Ginsburg and a very short story from Ray Bradbury. Civilized yet provocative eroticism from the earliest flowering of the sexual revolution. Edited by Ralph Ginzburg, numerous other contributors; layout and design by Herb Lubalin. Eros Magazine, New York. Original pictorial boards, very slightly rubbed at extremities, otherwise a very good copy.Eros Magazine was a short lived, but somewhat explosive literary contribution to the immediate post-Beat climate of the U.S. Appearing quarterly throughout 1962, and therafter ceasing publication, it was ground-breaking and controversial and, given the repressed sexual climate of the time (post-McCarthy and the Korean conflict, pre-hippy, and in advance of the Civil Rights movements of the mid-sixties), the editorial content was astonishingly assured, as is the exceptional quality of the design and layout. Publication was suspended with the fourth issue; the editor was arrested on 28 counts of mailing obscene matter and went to prison after a protracted legal struggle. Pictorial, paper boards. Profusely illustrated.with color and black & white photographic reproductions. Photography by Garry Winograd, Art Kane, Marvin Newman, Eliot Elisofon, Raymond Jacobs, Ralph M. Hattersley Jr., and Bert Stern's photos of Marilyn Monroe in issue #3. This is the publication which eventually led to the '63 Supreme Court decision defining obscenity. 369 pages total (80 + 97 + 96 + 96)
