Genuine First Us Edition
|Publisher||D. APPLETON & COMPANY|
D. Appleton & Company, 1882. The first American edition (not part of the International Scientific Series) of this iconic work by Charles Darwin., w/ many illustrations in text. The fastest selling of Darwin’s publications, this was the result of ten years of research on the interaction of worms with their physical environment and close observation of their behaviour, and was to be Darwin's last publication prior to his death in 1882. Despite being very worn, this is a true first American Edition, a very scarce work that often fetches $1000 or more. While the spine cover is missing and the book could use rebinding, former owner preferred to keep this complete example of an increasingly scarce genuine first edition as original as possible, adding instead a beautiful custom made clamshell case. Boards are mostly detached, and binding has compromised. No spine cover. Book cleaved in a few places due to broken binding cords, some edge chipping as a result to some of the pages. All pages are present,. as well as orginal boards, which are very rubbed on the edges. First EP it tattered, bookplate in front and rear. The clamshell case provides elegant shelf presence for this classic gem. 326 pages.
