| Item Description :Macmillan and Co., Sept. 1915. FIRST EDITION. H G Wells (c) 1915 ~;. 8 pp ads dated "15.8.15." Blind-stamped vertically ribbed 'RED' cloth.. This is a handsome, brightly gilded book and has not lost its' original sparkle. The corners are slightly bruised and a little edge wear is apparent, and is a real bright copy. This was one of the quintology of Wells's novels which "laid out the boundaries of normal male/female relations" -- following MARRIAGE (1912), THE PASSIONATE FRIENDS (1913), and THE WIFE OF SIR ISAAC HARMAN (1914). In THE RESEARCH MAGNIFICENT he posed a love situation of a poor boy and a rich girl. The book is filled with the problems created by status and desire.. [and] strongly describes the lessons of possessive love and the double standard it has created for males, who Wells thought needed less love and more sex.. In this book Wells is directly treating the early days of his life with Rebecca West, during which her possessive drive sometimes repelled him, but his sexual need brought him back. [Smith] The boy ultimately decides that he must live "nobly and thoroughly," and is killed trying to prevent soldiers from firing into a crowd.
