It includes the Italian and English text and music of the principal airs. Oliver Ditson acquired one of the oldest music publishers in America in 1842 after his partner passed away. The company traces its history to the firm of Ebenezer Batelle, who started selling music in 1783. The company was owned by two other men before Oliver Ditson acquired the company in 1842. The company was renamed the Oliver Ditson Company in 1857. By Ditson's death in 1888, the company was the largest enterprise of its type in the United States.
