Little, Brown and Company, 1856-1860. Eight (8) volume matched set in original publisher bindings. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Very good condition overall, with some light foxing, wear, bumps, etc, expected with a set of this antiquity. Title and volume number on spine. An excellent value for a much sought after set of what had been considered, the most comprehensive historical investigation published prior to the Civil War. Overall, very good condition, especially considering the vintage of the set. Pages are incredibly clean and bright white throughout. All volumes tight and sturdy - structurally very sound, spine wear and fading, small closed tear on spine of Vol.XIII, minimal foxing limited to inside covers and even less so around edges of frontispieces, elegantly penned former owners name with their historical residence (and quite applicable) “Plymouth, MA” on blank preliminary page in each volume. Extremely nice complete set of the earliest version of this Bancroft's landmark work covering up to 1776, and published over a 5-year period. Complete 8-volume set of The History of the United States by George Bancroft. Demand for this, what many consider the most comprehensive and accurate of pre-Civil War historical publications, were first published as an 8-volume set (as being offered here and covering through July of 1776. Later sets were expanded to ten volumes and cover through the Peace Treaty of 1778. As the earliest and smallest of the initial press runs, the 8-volume set is the most sought after by collectors. 3731 pages total.
