Complete 50 Volume Set, plus the Lectures on the Harvard Classics, which was published in 1914. THE HARVARD CLASSICS 50 VOLUME SET + LECTURES, Charles W. Eliot, editor. …. The Harvard Classics Shelf of Fiction was the creation of Dr. Charles Eliot, president of Harvard University, who had stated in speeches that the elements of a liberal education could be obtained by spending 15 minutes a day reading from a collection of books that could fit on a five-foot shelf. (Originally he had said a three-foot shelf.) The publisher P. F. Collier and Son saw an opportunity, and challenged him to make good on this statement by selecting an appropriate collection of works; the Harvard Classics was the result. He complied by compiling and editing The Harvard Classics, originally known as Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf -- a marvelous 51-volume anthology of classic works from world literature, with the works presented in as complete a form as possible. It includes volumes on the Greek and Roman philosophers, the complete poems of Milton, Greek dramas, Plutarch’s Lives, Pilgrim’s Progress, Folklore, English Drama, Don Quixote, The Divine Comedy, The Odyssey, the Aneid, Two Years Before the Mast, writings of Burke, Luther, Machiavelli, Benvenuto Cellini; Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, three volumes of English Poetry, Sacred Writing, Elizabethan Drama, and much, much more. Approximately 25,000 pages ! Images :
