| Item Description :New American Library, 1955. FIRST EDITION, first printing. Card covers, 247pp. + ads. Another issue of one of the longest running and very significant paperback magazines in American literature. An institution that sprang up in the 50's, showcasing original and first appearance of stories, poems, essays, etc of leading writers from around the world. It has sometimes lapsed, but then returned to life, outlasting imitators in nearly every decade. This issue is increasingly scarce and highly sought after due to the inclusion of both the first chapter of Catch-22 (named Catch-18 originally, as published here) and an excerpt from the beat generation classic On the Road. Early versions of chapters in two classic American works: "Catch- 18" was part of Joseph Heller's best selling CATCH-22, and "Jazz of the Beat Generation" by "Jean-Louis" is really a chapter of Jack Kerouac's ON THE ROAD. A tight, shiny copy. Slight yellowing to covers and a small tear at the top edge of the front cover which also has a horizontal crease running across the top portion. Pages are naturally yellowed; with a shallow crease running across the top edge of the first few pages. Otherwise clean and tight, and the color insert of a portrait of Dylan Thomas is present. Missing pages 130-167, though no obvious sign of their removal, thus may in fact be a rare publisher printing error – missing pages are of the Dylan Thomas piece and start of the Lehmann “
