The Atlantic Monthly, 1863. FIRST EDITION, thus, first printing. Volume XII - July-December 1863. Very good condition, bound with leather spines over cloth covered boards, minimal wear, binding is firm and secure, interior is clean with some minor scattered foxing. Book measures 6 1/2 x 9 1/2". Includes many first printings of stories, poems and essays : Contains the first printing of two Thoreau essays - one of his most important works, “Life Without Principle” (Borst D58, October, reprinted in “A Yankee in Canada” in 1866), and “Night and Moonlight” (Borst D61, November, reprinted in “Excursions”). Emerson contributes the poem “Voluntaries” (Myerson E164, October) and there are two first printings by Hawthorne, “Outside Glimpses of English Poverty” (July) and “Civic Banquets” (August).
