Harper & Brothers, 1880. FIRST EDITION, first printing. (Very early copy, as title page has “1880”, yet gift inscription was for Xmas 1879. Exceptionally clean and tight for this vintage, pages 42/43 shows staining from newpaper clipping which had been stored in book previously, former owner inscription/name. Illustrations, including 4 pages of maps. Four pages of advertisements publicizing books for young people. The study of natural history and of physical and political geography oriented to the young adult reader. (One of the very first books attempting to explain Darwin’s theory to a younger and more general readership – unique for work in that genre.) Published in the same era as Darwin’s most landmark 228 pages
