Frederick D. Grant, son of Ulysses S. Grant, ALS, 1p, May 24, 1888, 8vo also signed by his brother, U.S. Grant Jr., on official black mourning stationary related to their fathers death with the noted family home address of 3 East 66th Street, NYC. Handwritten letter by the elder son of the recently departed President to the longtime spiritual leader for the family, Bishop John P. Newman. (Bishop Newman had just been elected to the episcopacy at the 1888 General Conference of the M.E. Church, thus this letter of congratulations from the Grant family.) Bishop Newman also famously delivered the eulogy at General Grant’s funeral. The letter reads “Dear Bishop, Accept the congratulations of the entire Grant family. It would have given my father great pleasure to have signed the letter.” Professionally matted display measures 16” high x 13” wide with U.V. resistant acrylic plastic. Very scarce and historical museum quality heirloom.
