Opera theater poster 10 ½” x 14 ½” promoting performances of “The Masked Ball” March 18-20, 1987 in Florence, Italy. Starring Luciano Pavarotti. Very good overall condition, slight loss of print on performers names. An opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi with text by Antonio Somma. The opera's first production was at the Teatro Apollo, Rome, February 17, 1859. The opera is based on the assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden, but is not historically accurate. During its composition, Verdi was asked by government censors to make many changes to the opera due to its politically sensitive subject matter. Despite its tragic conclusion, Un ballo in maschera has many moments of the brilliance and irony associated with comedy -- a mixture which has led critics to label it "Shakespearean." Signed in black by Conductor Gianandrea Gavazzeni. Italian composer and conductor who was best known for his nearly 50 years of conducting opera at La Scala in Milan (b. July 25, 1909--d. Feb. 5, 1996). Increasingly scarce original opera memorabilia.
